Choosing Your Care Wisely

Alternative methods of healthcare often complement mainstream medicine in a manner that has been described as Integrative Medicine. Many of these alternative practices are ancient and have been practiced for generations. They mostly have anecdotal reports of efficacy and many have been found to be safe and useful in certain conditions.

However, a great number of these options are unproven by modern scientific research. Some have been found to be toxic or harmful to the human. Others are proven to be ineffective against the conditions suggested that they could be used for.

Before you choose a care modality, you must consider these important details about the use of Complementary, Alternative and Lifestyle Medicine (CALM) options:

  • Do not use CALM to replace conventional/standard care

  • Always ask for the advice of your doctor or healthcare provider

  • Do not postpone seeing a health care provider about a medical problem

  • Pregnant women and nursing mothers should consult their health carer before using CALM options

  • Discuss with the doctor before you use in children

  • If you have used without telling your doctor, inform them as soon as possible

  • Seek help from a hospital if you suffer any adverse effects following the use of alternative options
