Diabetes
A long term condition whereby the level of sugar in the blood increases to dangerous levels. It is a serious condition that runs in families.

Sugar (Glucose) is needed in the body to provide energy for our cells. The hormone called insulin is needed to move the sugar from your blood into the cell. When this does not happen, too much sugar will remain in the blood stream and too little sugar will go into the cell.
Both of these situations are not healthy, and they can be dangerous if they are not well controlled. Speak to your doctor if you have a family history of diabetes.
Background
The pancreas gland produces insulin to manage the level of sugar in the blood
-
Sometimes, it does not produce enough, and the sugar is uncontrolled
-
This is often called Type 1 Diabetes
-
-
At other times, the body is bigger than it should be and therefore the insulin does not go around as it should do. This includes when the body is obese or when a woman is pregnant.
-
This is often called Type 2 Diabetes
-
-
Some other types exist, although the two above are the common ones
