Anal Sex
Safe with pregnancy

This is the insertion of an item into a partner’s anus and rectum as part of sexual pleasure. Inserted items may include the erect penis (whereby it is called anal intercourse), sex toys, fingers or tongue
Caution
It is considered a high-risk sexual practice: the anus and rectum are fragile and vulnerable
The anus does not have the elasticity, lubrication or the strong walls that is found in the female vagina. Damage can easily occur if additional lubrication is not used
It can be quite uncomfortable or extremely painful for some
Empty your bowels beforehand if possible. You must however be prepared for the likely possibility of faecal contamination
It is best to use a condom at all times. Male-to-Male anal penetration is considered to be the sexual practice with the greatest risk of infection and damage
After anal sex, the penis must be cleaned and a new condom applied before vaginal penetration is attempted
Unprotected anal sex may increase the risk of infertility (Formation of Antisperm antibodies (ASA) in the recipient)
It is considered illegal in some countries
Therapy for:
Individuals have different reasons for practicing anal sex
The tight anal margin puts more pressure on the incoming penis thereby enhancing the pleasure
Some consider it to be the ‘most intimate’ sexual practice
Other reasons include:
- During menstruation
- As a form of contraception
- As foreplay
- As a means of preserving the hymen and, hence ‘virginity’
- As a form of sexual dominance for the penetrating partner
- As a form of sexual submission for the receiving partner
- Sexual adventure; exploring the 'forbidden fruit'
Comments
Always use lubrication generously
For male-to-male sex, oral sex and ‘frot’* mutual masturbation are sometimes considered safe alternatives.
Ensure that it is always your choice to participate
(* Frot: non-penetrative sexual activity between two males. The penises rub together in contact)
